Iran's Other Weapon of Mass Destruction

Carbon Confidential....

Ahead of acquiring an atomic bomb, Iran is already using a weapon of mass destruction to bring down the United States--rising oil prices.

The mullahocracy is determined to keep a lid on OPEC oil production in order to maximize Tehran's profits and America's pain. Iran's anti-American ally and fellow OPEC militant, Venezuela, is aiding the effort.

Iran's nuclear standoff with the West thus serves more than one purpose. Continued defiance and stalling buys Iran bomb-building time, further establishes Iran as the leader of radical Islam, and maintains the tension that fuels the speculation in oil that helps to push prices higher.

In other words, the oil weapon is both supported by and supporting the development of nuclear weapons. Never before in history has anything like this happened.

And never before in history has a great nation--the US--been so suicidal. Although they are clearly swimming in cash, the country's big, integrated, international oil companies are avoiding risk and behaving more like bankers, lawyers and hedge fund operators than the great oil finders and developers of yesteryear. The once giant domestic oil industry seems to be on its last legs, like the coal industry, thanks to Al Gore and Company. Paralyzed by manmade global warming hysteria and environmental extremism, the country lacks the political will to drill, produce and conserve its way out of the energy crisis. It ignores the potential for massive domestic development of heavy crude and tar sands, oil shale and liquified coal, the squeezing of new oil from old fields through enhanced recovery methods. The US ignores truly awesome energy resources that can be developed right now using proven, available technologies in favor of pie-in-the-sky alternatives such as solar, wind, and so-called biofuels--an especially cruel scam aimed at raising the price of corn, soy and other agricultural crops for the benefit of a handful of incredibly rich and secretive agribusiness firms.

What is to be done?

Drill. The US needs to drill for conventional and heavy oil and gas, produce and liquify coal, extract oil from sand and shale and old oil fields, needs to do all these things as a matter of urgent national security--like the nation's life depends on it. Which is exactly the case. As Iran and Venezuela and China and Russia understand--everyone, apparently, except for America's three Presidential candidates and do-nothing Congress--energy, not environmental extremism, is the lifeblood of a country. There is a limit to what the country--any country--can withstand. And we are rapidly approaching that limit.

If the US does not act soon and act in a big way to bring down the price of oil, it is only a matter of time before we will be counting the dead across our land--not from a nuclear blast (though our Islamist enemies are certainly planning such an attack), but from ever-escalating energy and food prices.

Rice: Palestinian Hamas is Proxy of Iran, Which Aims to Acquire Atomic Arms and Destroy Israel

Foreign Confidential....

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday confirmed what this reporter has been saying for many months--that Hamas terrorists are serving as the "proxy warriors" for an Iran bent on acquiring an atomic bomb and destroying Israel.

Addressing the American Jewish Committee in Washington, Rice defended the US policy of isolating Hamas, which, she said, refuses to renounce violence, recognize Israel's right to exist and respect all previous Palestinian agreements with Israel.

"But perhaps of deepest concern, the leaders of Hamas are increasingly serving as the proxy warriors of an Iranian regime that is destabilizing the region, seeking a nuclear capability and proclaiming its desire to destroy Israel," Rice said.

'Belt of Extremism'

She described a new "belt of extremism" that ranges from Hamas in Gaza to the Lebanese Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah in Lebanon to radicals in Iraq and "radicals even increasingly in places like Afghanistan."

It is "supported overwhelmingly by Iran and to a certain extent Syria, but particularly Iran, gives this conflict a regional dimension it has not had before," Rice said.

"How can any government negotiate with a group that sees every agreement, every choice not as a compromise to advance peace, but as a tactic to later advance war?" she asked.

"No, the only responsible policy is to isolate Hamas and defend against its threats until Hamas makes the choice that supports peace," Rice said.

Rice called for international support for president Mahmud Abbas's Palestinian Authority, which she said had "the will to fight terrorism" and "the desire to govern effectively" but did not yet have the means.

CEO Says Heparin Contamination Was Deliberate

The chief executive officer of the US pharmaceutical company, Baxter International, says its blood thinner, Heparin, which has been linked to dozens of deaths, appears to have been deliberately contaminated.

Robert Parkinson said Tuesday that a contaminant known as "oversulfated chondroitin sulfate" was found in certain lots of Baxter's Heparin product.

In prepared remarks before a US Congressional subcommittee, Parkinson also said it was difficult to detect the introduction of the contaminant because of how closely it mimicked heparin.

Eighty one deaths have been associated with allergic reactions to tainted doses of heparin.

The drug is used to help patients undergoing kidney dialysis and other procedures. In addition to Baxter, other companies make the medication. Baxter recalled heparin about two months ago.

Heparin is made from ingredients imported from China. Chinese officials say the material they supply is not the source of the health problems.

Turmoil in Wheat Markets Drives Up Food Prices

As if to confirm our warnings, The Washington Post has published a truly terrifying article about the global food crisis.

Across America, turmoil in the world wheat markets has sent prices of bread, pasta, noodles, pizza, pastry and bagels skittering upward, bringing protests from consumers.

But underlying this food inflation are changes that are transforming US agriculture and making a return to the long era of cheap wheat products doubtful at best.

Half a continent away, in the North Dakota country that grows the high-quality wheats ... many farmers are cutting back on growing wheat in favor of more profitable, less disease-prone corn and soybeans for ethanol refineries and Asian consumers.

Readers Desert The New York Times

Dateline USA.... Good news.

Editor and Publisher reports that The New York Times is again showing a decline in circulation--a dramatic decline, in fact--while the Wall Street Journal enjoys a modest rise.

The Times has often blamed the rise of Internet media for its loss of advertising and circulation.

The Journal on the other hand has significantly increased its front-page political reporting, which has proven to be popular with the paper's readers.

Our take on The Times' troubles: barring revolutionary change at the top, the illness is terminal. The paper has degenerated into an elitist shrine to the worst kind of left-liberal ideology. When they are not writing about the lifestyles of the rich and famous, The Times' spoiled and privileged writers are celebrating the criminal class instead of the middle class; the welfare class instead of the working class; the lumpenproletariat, to use a hoary Marxist term, instead of the proletariat. The lifestyles and opinions of Wall Street bankers, Hollywood moguls, and drug dealers--and Muslim maniacs plotting America's doom--are all endlessly fascinating topics, according to The Times' editors. The problems of ordinary Americans, not so fascinating. One suspects the paper longs for the day when every last lunch-pail worker in America will either be dead or on welfare--provided they are living in government green housing powered by windmills or what-have-you.

Time and again, The Times has bent over backwards to understand--i.e. rationalize and justify--terrorism and violent crime by unearthing the so-called root causes of these terrible plagues. The paper wonders why it has lost Jewish readers--in New York!--after making it clear that it cares more about accommodating Islamist insanity than defending Israeli independence.

To hell with The Times--the sooner the better.

Convicted Tibet Rioters Sentenced to Prison Terms

Chinese state media say a court in Tibet has imprisoned 17 people for terms of three years to life for their roles in deadly riots and violence in the region last month.

The official Xinhua news agency did not give any other details on the Lhasa court ruling in a brief dispatch Tuesday.

Tibet's Indian-based government-in-exile says more than 200 people died in a crackdown by Chinese forces on anti-government protesters and rioters.

"Peaceful Tibetan protestors were provoked" by the Chinese forces into committing acts of violence, a spokesman for the government-in-exile told a news conference Tuesday, adding that "some Chinese-planted agents themselves started the riots that left some Chinese dead."

Eyewitness accounts and amateur videos of the violence paint a different picture. Tourists have reported that mobs beat ethnic Chinese whose arrival in the region has been blamed by Tibetans for altering its way of life.

China blames Tibetan rioters for the deaths of at least 20 people.

China has ruled Tibet for nearly 60 years. The Communist Party says it liberated Tibetans from what it calls "the dark ages" of feudal serfdom.

EDITOR'S NOTE: China is right about that. Old Tibet was a barbaric theocracy that made medieval Europe seem progressive and humane by comparison. More than 95% of the people were serfs or slaves with no human rights. Monks and nobles tortured, murdered, mutilated their victims at will. The most depraved among the ruling elite drank blood from bowls made of human skulls, fashioned human bones into implements, and decorated their living quarters with human skin.

Travelers to the remote, isolated land were shocked and appalled by the conditions. But visiting Nazis, seeking mystical powers in the "birthplace of the swastika" and an alliance with the Dalai Lama's regime, admired the "manly violence" and brutality, as one of Hitler's emissaries put it.

The exiled Dalai Lama, who, as a teenager, was the absolute ruler of Tibet before its liberation at the hands of Chinese troops, has acknowledged "unsavory aspects" of the old social system. Perhaps influenced by the Nazis and fascists (e.g. Miguel Serrano, a former Chilean diplomat, who is regarded as the founder of a mystical, racist creed known as Esoteric Hitlerism) with whom he has maintained lifelong friendships, the Nobel laureate has never apologized for the atrocities and horrors that were commonplace in Old Tibet.

He says that he seeks only cultural autonomy for his people. Actually, his movement aims to split so-called Greater Tibet--about a quarter of China's current territory--from China.

Approaching 60, Israel Prepares for War

Foreign Confidential....

Approaching its 60th year of independence, Israel is preparing for another war.

This time, the enemy is a former friend--nuclear-arming, non-Arab Iran--which aims to annihilate the Jewish state with the help of its Islamist Arab proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas, and secular Arab ally, Syria.

Oil-rich Iran, once ruled by a modernizing monarch, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, is an implacable foe. It will settle for nothing less than the destruction of Israel, the expulsion of the United States from the Middle East, and strategic parity with Western Europe.

Hamas has rockets and suicide bombers--a serious problem for Israel, but nowhere near an existential threat. And there is still a chance that Syria will refrain from joining the conflict at the last minute. But Iran and Hezbollah have enough missiles to flatten Tel Aviv and Haifa. And Iran also has huge stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons.

The next war will thus be an aerial war--a war of rockets against Israeli population centers--inspired by the examples of Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

Fortunately, Israel is ready, willing, and able to defend itself. The country that was forged in fury, that was founded after the Holocaust as a haven for oppressed and persecuted Jews, that country will not be taken by surprise. Nor will Israel be defeated--no way. The Jewish people did not return to their historic and religious homeland after 2,000 years of exile--against all odds--in order to lose it and again become homeless.

The international community, so big on supposedly understanding the so-called legitimate grievances of so many different groups and the so-called root causes of so many conflicts, should arguably spend more time trying to understand Israel than its Islamist enemies. More specifically, the world needs to know that there will not be another Holocaust because Israel will use any and all necessary weapons to prevent that from happening.

In short, Islamist Iran will be destroyed as a nation--it will be consumed in nuclear fire--if it goes ahead with its insane plot.

Astronaut Warns of Global Cooling, Possible Ice Age

Carbon Confidential....

In the United States, it is known as the winter that won't end. Record snowfalls, gloomy, cloudy, cold days ... no wonder more and more people are questioning the manmade global warming theory. Add rising energy prices--partly caused by the crippling of our political will to drill for oil and gas and mine and liquify coal--and it is only a matter of time before people will be pelting Al Gore and other climate change charlatans with snowballs.

According to Phil Chapman, the first Australian to become a NASA astronaut, there will be plenty of snow. Now a San Francisco-based geophysicist, Chapman asserts that people should prepare themselves for possible global cooling and a "little ice age." Writing in The Australian, he says the Earth's average temperature has remained steady or slowly declined during the past decade -- and that all four tracking agencies report it "cooled by about 0.7C in 2007." That, he says, is the "fastest temperature change in the instrumental record."

Back to 1930

Chapman: "This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record and it puts us back where we were in 1930. If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over. It is time to put aside the global warming dogma, at least to begin contingency planning about what to do if we are moving into another little ice age, similar to the one that lasted from 1100 to 1850."

He adds that a little ice age would be "much more harmful than anything warming may do", but still benign by comparison with the severe glaciation that for the past several million years has almost always blighted the planet.

He concludes: "All those urging action to curb global warming need to take off the blinkers and give some thought to what we should do if we are facing global cooling instead. It will be difficult for people to face the truth when their reputations, careers, government grants or hopes for social change depend on global warming, but the fate of civilisation may be at stake."

Click here to read Chapman's provocative piece, which his been denounced by the green fascists for whom the crackpot theory of manmade global warming is an article of faith that must be upheld at any cost, regardless of the harm that it causes to humanity.

US State Department Defends Demented Carter

Foreign Confidential....

The United States has reportedly registered an official protest with Israel against its ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, for calling former US President Jimmy Carter an "enemy of Israel" prior to Carter's recent visit to the region.

In addition, the US State Department is planning to issue a public statement condemning comments made by Gillerman at a press conference in New York on Thursday, where he called Carter a "bigot."

Truth be told, Gillerman was too understated in his criticism of Carter. He is a borderline American traitor. His administration allowed--and assisted--the overthrow of one of America's great allies, the Shah of Iran, in a craven attempt to curry favor with the anti-American, anti-democratic Ayatollah Khomeini.

Not for nothing did Democrats desert their party because of the demented Carter and his left-wing henchmen. Not for nothing is Carter a lightning rod of criticism to this day ... a friend and fan of Fidel Casto, Hugo Chavez, nuclear-arming, Iranian maniac-in-chief Mahmoud Ahmadinehad and nuclear-armed, North Korean madman Kim Jong-Il.

Condemnation is too good for Carter. He should be investigated.

North Korea Prepares for Nuclear War

Must reading from The Sunday Times--a confirmation of our worst suspicions about the planet's worst dictatorship and the extent to which it has deceived America's worst-ever Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, and her chief negotiator with the criminal Kimist/Stalinist regime, Christopher ("Kim Jong") Hill.

China Confidential has long maintained that Pyongyang has every intention of keeping, sharing--and using--its nuclear arms.

North Korean military engineers are completing an underground runway beneath a mountain that can protect fighter aircraft from attack until they take off at high speed through the mouth of a tunnel.

The 6,000 ft. runway is a few minutes’ flying time from the tense front line where the Korean People’s Army faces soldiers from the United States and South Korea.

The project was identified by an air force defector from North Korea and captured on a satellite image by Google Earth, according to reports in the South Korean press last week.

It is one of three underground fighter bases among an elaborate subterranean military infrastructure built to withstand a “shock and awe” assault in the first moments of a war, the defector said.

The runway, reminiscent of the Thunderbirds television series, highlights the strange and secretive nature of the regime that provided the expertise for a partially built nuclear reactor in Syria, film of which was released by the CIA last week.

Dalai Lama's Website is Pure Propaganda

In the hope of winning peace and happiness for my people, I tried for years to establish an amicable relationship with the powerful and authoritarian Chinese officials. Also, I set out to reform the unsavory aspects of our social system. With the view to introducing democracy, I constituted a committee consisting some 50 members. On the recommendation of the committee, some social welfare reforms were implemented, but my efforts towards introducing further reforms failed as the Chinese had by then converted Tibet into their colony.

As soon as the Chinese army had gained full control of Tibet, they shed their initial semblance of discipline and politeness to become ever more demanding and repressive. Brutal forces were used to suppress the Tibetan resistance, first in Kham and Amdo, and finally in the whole of Tibet by March 1959.

As a result, I was compelled to seek refuge in India in order to continue our struggle for the cause of Tibet. Among my initiatives in exile were to see to it that the Tibetan refugees, who were arriving in India in thousands, were given proper education and rehabilitation facilities. I also set out to continue my earlier plans to democratise Tibetan society.

-The Dalai Lama

The above quotation, taken from the Dalai Lama's own Website, shows that he is a liar and a charlatan. His "unsavory" social system was hell on earth--a feudal theocracy in which more than 95% of the population were serfs or slaves with no human rights. The barbarism and brutality of Old Tibet made medieval Europe look humane and progressive by comparison. Torture and mutilation were commonplace. The monks pretty much owned everything. The most depraved among them drank the blood of the people--literally--and decorated their monasteries with wall hangings made of human skin. The skin of children, as we have previously reported, was especially sought after and prized.

The failed armed insurrection of his monks and nobles was aided by Britain and the United States. After he fled to India, the CIA paid the Dalai Lama an annual personal subsidy of $180,000 for decades; and the CIA funded, armed and trained Tibetan guerrillas and propaganda efforts around the world until the Nixon administration wisely ended the covert operation in the context of establishing relations with China. (But the Daial Lama continued to receive his yearly payment.)

It defies reason that this man--who has urged the US to negotiate with Osama Binladen and other terrorists--and his so-called Greater Tibet autonomy movement, which actually seeks to carve out and control about a quarter of China's current territory, have come to be so widely admired and supported.

In the interest of world peace, the best thing that could happen would be for the world to turn its back on the Nobel Peace Prize winning demagogue and his separatist cause.

Question: all that money that is donated to him and his cause--exactly where does it go? How is it spent? Who is accountable?

Interpol Warns Al Qaeda Could Attack Olympics

Early warning from Washington, London, and Interpol via AFP....

The United States and Britain issued new travel alerts warning of an increased terrorist threat in China Friday, as Interpol said Beijing must prepare for a possible Al-Qaeda attack at the Olympics.

The US State Department warned Americans travelling to the Asian country of a "heightened risk that extremist groups will conduct terrorist acts within China in the near future."

It said any large-scale public event, such as the Olympic Games in Beijing in August, "may present an attractive target for terrorists," and warned its citizens travelling in China to be alert.

The statement updated March travel advice which said the threat of terrorism against Americans in China "remains low."

It was issued as Britain also upgraded its terror assessment for China, where it had previously said the risk was "low."

"There is an underlying threat from terrorism in China," the Foreign Office said on its travel advice web site, although it said it was not discouraging travel there.

The change "reflects both the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks and the possibility of terrorist attacks by groups opposed to the Chinese government," it said.

"Particularly in the run-up to the Olympic Games, attacks cannot be ruled out, particularly in major urban areas. They could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers," it added.

Earlier Friday, Interpol chief Ronald Noble warned China must be prepared for a possible Al-Qaeda attack on the Beijing Olympics, as well as potentially violent disruption from pro-Tibet protestors.

"We must be prepared for the possibility that Al-Qaeda or some other terrorist group will attempt to launch a deadly terrorist attack at these Olympics," he told an international conference on security for the Games in Beijing, according to a copy of his speech.

The police chief said a worldwide television audience of billions and a massive influx of foreign visitors could provide "easy cover for terrorists and ensure any attack during the Olympics would have an immediate global impact."

China's Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu backed his remarks, telling the conference, according to a translation of his speech: "There is no doubt that the biggest threat facing the Beijing Olympics is terrorism."

Open Memo to Voters in North Carolina and Indiana

Ahead of the Democratic primary contests, kindly consider the following:

1. If Barack Hussein Obama gets to the White House, he will be America's first Muslim-born President (according to Islamic religious law), and the first President to have practiced Islam (as a child).

2. Obama's election will be hailed by hate-filled Muslim fanatics and jihadists around the world. Islamist preachers, such as the Hamas preacher of Gaza, who predict and call for the Islamic conquest of "the two Americas" and Europe will interpret an Obama victory as a sign of divine support. Not for nothing has Hamas endorsed Obama (see video below).

3. Obama will initiate a "diplomatic surge" toward nuclear-arming, Islamist Iran, which is competing with Sunni Al Qaeda for leadership of the Islamic world. Iran's foreign policy is imperialist in that it seeks to overthrow the status quo--the power relations among nations--regionally and globally. Iran intends to develop an arsenal of nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles in order to destroy both Israel and the United States while achieving strategic parity with Western Europe. Attempts to appease Iran have failed to prevent war; on the contrary, they have made war inevitable. Obama's diplomatic surge will simply allow Iran to play for time until it is ready to act.

A National Oil Company for the US?

Carbon Confidential....

Energy is the lifeblood of a nation. The world runs on oil and will continue to run on oil for at least another 20 years. Every developed nation except the United States has an energy program. National oil companies are playing a larger role in the international energy picture. The US has no national oil company.

Is that logical?

It isn't, of course. But you would not know that by listening to the three US Presidential candidates. Not one candidate has a serious plan to lower oil prices. On the contrary, the two rival Democrats actually assert that high oil prices are a good thing because they cut carbon output by discouraging energy use that supposedly contributes to manmade global warming.

Baloney. Global warming is a scam. The planet is cooling instead of warming. High energy prices are killing America. And a possible solution--creation of a national oil company--is a non-starter because of an unholy tacit alliance between Big Oil and Big Green. They are united by their fierce opposition to or complete disinterest in development of domestic reserves of oil, natural gas, and coal.

But that is exactly what the nation most needs. Massive development of energy resources is the key to cutting oil prices. Without a national oil company--a big outfit dedicated to producing energy in the national interest--the much needed resources will probably remain locked up. Heavy oil (heavy crude and tar sands), enhanced oil recovery (squeezing new oil from old fields), liquified coal, and shale oil are already profitable given today's high oil prices. The abundant resources are not profitable enough, however, for for-profit companies, especially multinational, integrated oil companies. Hence, the need for a national oil company.

We don't trust the private sector with our national security. So why do we trust the private sector with our energy security?

Grant Thornton: Privately Held Chinese Companies Continue to Grow Rapidly, Raise Capital Overseas

Mainland China has the highest number of privately held businesses expecting to grow through acquisition (67%) or IPO (60%) in the next three years, far above the global average, according to the latest findings of the Grant Thornton International Business Report (IBR).

The results indicate that despite the current turbulence in the world financial markets, privately held businesses in mainland China are growing rapidly and seeking funds externally.

Desmond Yuen, Managing Partner of China Practice at Grant Thornton says: "Businesses in mainland China are becoming increasingly sophisticated, international and acquisitive in their outlook. They are focused on building value rather than looking to realise it at this sage and are excited about following their own growth strategies through domestic acquisition and IPO. It is no doubt that Chinese M&A activity is being fuelled by finance available from the equity markets."

Planning Acquisitions

The IBR says 29% of Hong Kong privately held businesses are planning to grow through acquisition in the next three years. 69% of those businesses anticipate a cross-border deal. This result places Hong Kong the first among all the 34 economies surveyed globally. Furthermore, 43% of those Hong Kong businesses are expecting to grow through domestic acquisition.

The survey also reveals that business owners in the fast growing BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and mainland China) economies are now enthusiastically embracing M&A, and are often keener to make acquisitions than businesses from more mature markets. Overall, 59% of businesses surveyed in the BRIC economies said they anticipated an acquisition in the next three years. 47% of surveyed BRIC businesses expected to undergo public listing in the next three years.

"Compared to respondents in the more mature markets such as the US and the UK, a greater proportion of businesses in the BRIC economies are expecting to undertake a public listing in the near future," Yuen said. "The findings support the IBR business optimism survey we have conducted previously, which identified business owners from the emerging economies as the most optimistic in the world."

'Kim Jong' Hill Surprised by Nuclear Video

One of America's most notorious appeasers of totalitarian terror--Christopher ("Kim Jong") Hill--is finally being sidelined.

Having kowtowed to North Korea, the top American negotiator in nuclear talks with the secretive Stalinist state has been taken by surprise by the Bush administration's decision to make public a highly classified video showing North Koreans working at a clandestine Syrian nuclear reactor before it was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike last September 6.

Hill negotiated the terribly flawed nuclear disarmament agreement with North Korea that amounted to a "surrender" to Pyongyang, as the administration's former ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, put it.

North Korea is more than three months overdue in making a full declaration of its nuclear program, including any proliferation activity, under the Chinese-sponsored six-party accord, in which Pyongyang agreed to scrap its program in exchange for economic aid and diplomatic benefits.

Death by Peace Prize: Why Millions Could Die Because of Gore, Carter and the Dalai Lama

Regardless of their intentions, three Nobel Peace Prize winners--Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, and the Dalai Lama--are leading humanity straight to hell.

Tens of millions of people are possibly facing death and starvation because of the three Nobel laureates, whose diverse but weirdly connected campaigns and causes have been embraced and endorsed by supposedly enlightened mainstream media. A brief overview follows:

The Goring of America:
The former Vice President has elevated a crackpot theory about manmade global warming to the level of a national religion. His fanatic utterances and filmed slideshow, for which he won an Academy Award, have contributed mightily to a crushing sense of hopelessness and despair and helped to bring the United States to a terrible tipping point.

Energy is the the lifeblood of any nation; but thanks to Gore, genuine energy development--meaning the production of vital oil and gas and coal--is being stopped, sapped, and sidelined in favor of cockeyed, government-backed green energy dreams and complex carbon trading schemes. Relative handfuls of entrepreneurs and promoters benefit from the energy dreams; Wall Street bankers, eyeing a potential trillion-dollar market in hot air, hope to profit from the trading schemes.

Meanwhile, the price of gasoline is almost certain to continue climbing; and food inflation--fueled by government mandates and subsidies actually aimed at creating windfall profits for Big Agribusiness by boosting corn and soy prices--is raising the terrifying specter of serious food shortages and mass hunger across the globe.

In the United States, many rural county officials and Congressmen representing rural districts are already reporting alarming spikes in the numbers of residents seeking public assistance--for food. If energy and food prices are allowed to keep on rising, masses of middle class Americans will be pauperized, and those who are already at the bottom rungs of the economic ladder will freeze (during the winter months, especially in light of evidence that the planet is cooling instead of warming), starve, and die. Countless poor people will perish in fires triggered by cheap, unsafe heating devices.

One is tempted to joke that it is only a matter of time before angry Americans pelt Al Gore with snowballs; but his crippling of the country is no laughing matter. When the history of the era is written, this reporter predicts, the damage done by Gore will far surpass the terrible cost in human life and treasure of the Iraq war. Whereas one can envision a way out of Iraq--regime change in Iran would be a good start--it is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine an acceptable end to the Goring of America.

The Carter Curse:
The former US President, whose administration assisted in the Islamist overthrow of Iran's pro-Western, modernizing monarch, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, is now helping Iran's monstrous, missile-mad mullahocracy to overthrow the international status quo--regionally and globally. Iran's intentions and aims are clear; at a minimum, it seeks an arsenal of nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles in order to destroy Israel, drive the US from the Middle East, and dominate Europe. The regime's more maximalist mullahs aim higher--for "a world without America," in the words of their clerical fascist front-man, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Like fictional villains, these real-life lunatics plot and plan America's doom.

Thus, the consequences of Carter's campaign could be catastrophic for the entire civilized world. Instead of preventing war, his attempts at appeasement are likely to make war inevitable and once unthinkable events--i.e. Iranian-sponsored nuclear attacks on Israel and the US--sickeningly plausible.

As shown by his much publicized, Middle Eastern terror tour, Carter's underhanded diplomacy undermines the national security of both the US and Israel by undercutting the international push for new sanctions on Iran over its ominous nuclear enrichment program while emboldening Tehran's anti-American terrorist proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah, and anti-American ally, Syria.

The Dalai Lama's Revenge: Tibet's former absolute ruler, the exiled Dalai Lama, is out to split China. His "Greater Tibet" autonomy movement actually aims to cut off about a quarter of the country's current territory. He seeks a restoration of theocratic government over the so-called roof of the world--a strategically important, resource-rich region that was a model of backwardness and misery before Chinese liberation. Contrary to the appealing myth, Old Tibet was no Shangri-La. On the contrary, the land ruled by the teenage Dalai Lama with the help of his depraved monks and nobles, was a hellish place. More than 95% of the population were serfs or slaves with no human rights. Torture and brutality were commonplace. Big monasteries owned nearly everything. Sadistic monks raped women and children, drank the blood of the people--literally--from bowls made out of human skulls, and decorated their living quarters with wall hangings made of human skin. The skin of children was particularly prized for this purpose.

All of which is not to suggest that the Dalai Lama (who has urged the US to negotiate with Osama Binladen) wants to return to those horrific days, although he has never apologized for the Hitlerian atrocities, oppression and exploitation that distinguished Old Tibet--birthplace of the swastika in the eyes of his prewar admiring Nazi visitors and lifelong Nazi and fascist friends--never admitted that the liberation and education of the serfs was the main reason the monks rose up (with the well documented help of the CIA during the Cold War) against China following the much needed intervention of the central government in Tibetan affairs. The Dalai Lama insists that he merely seeks autonomy for his homeland; but independence is his goal.

It is a prescription for violence. China is a multicultural, multinational country; and Tibet has always been and will always be a part of China. It will never allow a split. Independence for Greater Tibet could lead restive Muslim areas to try to split from China, too. And there is no telling what could happen if the center does not hold. A series of internal conflicts could consume millions of lives.

Should pro-independence forces in Taiwan try to use the opportunity of chaos to declare formal independence from the mainland, a conflict in the Taiwan Strait could conceivably endanger the security of the world by pitting two nuclear powers--China and the US--against each other. Washington is still seemingly obligated to help Taiwan--which China regards as a renegade province--to defend itself.

So much for the bad news. The good news (some consolation) is that the looming chaos and conflicts create opportunities for new wannabe winners of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Al Qaeda Agents Seek Recruits Among Polisario

Foreign Confidential....

Analysts say Al Qaeda agents may be trying to recruit members of the Polisario, the guerrilla arm of the Algerian-backed, failed independence movement of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The exiled group is committed to keeping alive Africa's longest-running territorial dispute, centered on the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara. For 32 years, the SADR and the Polisario have fought to separate the sparsely populated (about 260,000 inhabitants), resource-rich region from pro-Western, moderate Morocco.

The separatist movement's notoriously corrupt leaders are based in the wretched, Polisario-run Sahara refugee camps south of Tindouf in southwestern Algeria. Women and children are held in the camps against their will. They are threatened with starvation as international humanitarian aid is embezzled by Polisario commanders for resale on the black market in Algeria and other neighboring countries.

In short, the conditions are ripe for Al Qaeda agents armed with cash and tales of a glorious global jihad.

America Paralyzed by Fear and Global Warming Hysteria as Gasoline Prices Rise to Deadly Levels

It's killing us.
-Jean Beuns, a New York cab driver quoted by AP, referring to the impact of rising gasoline prices.

Dateline USA....

As gasoline prices jumped for the first time to an average $3.50 a gallon at filling stations across America, an apparently paralyzed and defeated nation remained focused on ... carbon.

Seriously. Go into any American bookstore, and you will find entire shelves--whole sections--devoted to carbon footprints, carbon emissions, and other green crap.

Never mind that more and more serious scientists are finally finding the courage to speak up and question the manmade global warming scam. Elitist opinion, led by former US Vice President Al Gore, Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama, and the left wing of the mainstream media, is still firmly in charge of the planetary issues agenda.

Oil is bad, gas is bad, coal is bad, anything that is proven and big and essential to our national security and economic well being is bad, the cripple-America-for-its-own-good crowd cry. Monstrous windmills are good, the zealots tell us. Wave energy is good, the whackos assure us. Growing food to fuel SUVs instead of feeding people is wonderful, the fraudsters and fools insist.

And so it goes.

Not one US Presidential candidate has an oil policy, even though the world depends on oil and will continue to depend on oil for at least two decades. Not one candidate shows interest in tapping the awesome deposits of heavy oil (both crude and tar sands) into which the world is actually running instead of running out of. Not one candidate says a word about enhanced oil recovery--squeezing new oil from old fields. Not one candidate is committed to bringing down gasoline prices. Not one candidate cares about clean coal. Not one candidate seems to give a damn that millions of Americans could soon be in danger of choosing between buying food or buying gasoline to drive to work--or oil or propane to heat their homes.

Heaven help what was once the greatest nation on Earth.

The New York cab driver meant well but got it wrong. He skipped a step. Oil isn't killing us. Our own politicians are killing us.

China Pushes Oil Companies to Pump More Crude

Reuters yesterday published a truly important article about China's thirst for oil.

Turns out, Beijing is pursuing an oil policy that is far more intelligent and progressive than the do-nothing American approach.

Unlike Washington, which is apparently paralyzed by global warming hysteria and hatred of the oil industry--and industry in general--China is pushing production.

That's right--production. Instead of mandating unclean, uneconomical, food inflation-causing biofuels and menacing the world's poor, China is increasing output of oil.

China, often blamed for propelling oil's five-year rally, is also doing more than many big producers to temper the rise by pressing its state-owned oil companies to pump more crude--at almost any cost.

Oil's rise to more than $117 a barrel on Monday from $30 in 2003 has certainly been aided by surging Asian demand. But lately traders have also taken notice of flat or declining output from non-OPEC producers like Mexico and Britain, a worrying sign for future supplies.

In Russia, the world's No. 2 producer after Saudi Arabia, output failed to grow for a third month in a row in March.

But in China, where you might expect a decline from old fields like Daqing, which has been pumping for nearly half a century, growth has been small but steady. Output climbed 2.2 percent in the first quarter, data showed last Thursday.

Defying gloomy predictions that their fields would follow the offshore North Sea or the huge Mexican Cantarell field into decline, China's oil companies have channeled vast amounts of cash into high- and low-tech methods of extracting extra barrels of crude.

While surging oil demand in China grabs the headlines, its upstream, or production, sector has quietly become the world's fifth biggest at 3.76 million barrels a day, displacing Mexico and closing in on Iran, which pumps just under four million barrels a day....

About Obama and Hillary's 3 AM Ad

Dateline USA....

White House hopeful Hillary Clinton has been unfairly criticized and ridiculed for her 3 AM red phone call television attack ad that suggests that Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama is not ready for the job of Commander-in-Chief.

Truth is, the next President of the United States should only be so lucky to get a 3 AM call about a crisis--say, evidence that Iran has developed nuclear weapons--for which a diplomatic solution could still be found, at least, in principle.

Intelligence experts agree that the chances of a catastrophic call--about one or more nuclear explosions on US soil--are growing annually.

No Time to Call

Should terrorists attack Washington, DC with a nuclear weapon, there would be no time for a phone call--not even to the President. In fact, a noted analyst and scholar told a government security panel last week that a nuclear attack somewhere in the US is likely to occur sometime within the next 20 years. Cham E. Dallas, director of the Institute for Health management and Mass Destruction Defense at the University of Georgia, testified before a hearing of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security.

"It's inevitable... I think it's wistful to think it won't happen by 20 years," he said.

Iranian Cargo Ships

Coordinated nuclear attacks--from cargo ships carrying concealed, containerized missile launching systems and/or terrorists penetrating the US from Mexico--could end the US as we know it. In a flash, the awful fantasies that have fueled generations of novelists, filmmakers, and comic book creators--and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who dreams of a "world without America"--could come true.

Like it or not, an Obama Presidency would increase the likelihood of such an attack, which could cripple the US for decades. The Democratic frontrunner is committed to a "diplomatic surge" with nuclear-arming, Islamist Iran.

An Appeasement Policy

Translation: Obama believes that Iran can be appeased, just as Britain's Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain mistakenly believed that Nazi Germany could be appeased before World War II. Like Chamberlain, Obama does not understand that a rising, totalitarian power bent on overthrowing the regional and global status quo--the power relations among nations--cannot be appeased. Instead of preventing war, appeasement makes war inevitable. That is the lesson of Munich.

Something else to consider: the (stolen) election of Obama's obvious political model, John F. Kennedy, brought the US and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. Kennedy's summit talks with Nikita Krushchev left the Russian leader with the impression that the new US President was weak and inexperienced, and led to the Cuban Misssile Crisis--which came close to blowing up the world.

UPDATE: Hillary Clinton confirmed Monday that as President she would be willing to use nuclear weapons against Iran if it were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel.

Clinton’s remarks, made in an interview on MSNBC’s “Countdown With Keith Olbermann,” clarified a statement she made last week in a Democratic presidential debate in Philadelphia. In that debate, the US Senator from New York said an Iranian attack on Israel would bring “massive retaliation,” without defining what the phrase meant.

In the interview Monday, Clinton affirmed that she would warn Iran’s leaders that “their use of nuclear weapons against Israel would provoke a nuclear response from the United States.”

Mideast Madness: Hard News and Perspective

Foreign Confidential....

Escalating violence and threats across the blood-drenched Middle East.... Amid the showdown between the Iraqi government and the Iranian-backed Iraqi Shiite militia leader Muqtada al-Sadr, who has threatened "open war" against the government and the United States, a leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq has declared that a one-month campaign will be launched, where the group will "offer the head of an American" as "a gift" to US President George Bush.

According to an audiotape made public on Saturday, Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, said the campaign was announced in "celebration" of the 4,000 US troops who have died in Iraq.

At the same time, there are signs of increasing hostility between Sunni Al Qaeda and the Shiite regime in Iran. In an audio tape that appeared on the Internet Friday, Al Qaeda Number 2 Ayman al-Zawahiri said Sadr "has become the laughing stock of the world." The Egyptian-born terrorist called the Shiite leader a "naive boy" and a "toy" in the hands of Iranian intelligence.

So much for the news. For much needed perspective, we recommend
FrontPage Magazine
. The online journal has published an in-depth interview with former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the threats from Iran and Al Qaeda. Netanyahu says:

There are two strains to this dogma: the militant Sunnis and the militant Shiites. One burst out in Iran in 1979 and a decade later the victory of the mujahideen heralded the rise of Al Qaeda. If you look at what has happened politically, not economically, to the world – what has happened in terms of politics and security--in the decades that have passed since you see a clear trajectory of the rise of militant Islam. You see it not only taking over countries, which it has, but also sending its sway over many people in a very large continuum of Muslims. Obviously they haven’t been able to take over the majority, and even the minority is small, but the minority of a very, very large majority is troubling in itself.

Their goals are unlimited. Whatever their successes so far, they don’t intend to stop and they continue. They have been competing with each other--these militant strains of Islam--on who will produce the more spectacular successes for the creed. The militant Sunnis have bombed New York, Washington, Bali, and the European capitals. The militant Shiites in Iran are openly boasting that they are racing to develop nuclear weapons with the explicit announced goal of wiping Israel from the face of the earth and re-establishing the caliphate under militant Shiite-Iranian rule--a caliphate that includes the territories from Iran to Spain. They are developing long-range ballistic missiles, first that are targeted to every European capital and within a decade to the eastern coast of the American mainland. And in the process they are clearly meddling in Iraq, as the congressional testimony last week described it. They have already more than meddled in Lebanon. It used to be said that Hezbollah is a state within a state, it’s not clear that has not been versed. Hezbollah now has some 40,000 rockets, which a lot more than they had before the Second Lebanon War. These rockets are much more lethal and longer range and can reach a good portion of this country. And this is all done by Iran--it cannot be understood as anything but an Iranian operation. Equally, Iran’s proxies have already taken over half of Palestinian society--they have taken over Gaza and they are agitating to take more.

This is not merely a local problem. This is a global problem. Obviously if Iran acquires nuclear weapons everything that we have been talking about will pale in comparison. The power to extend power and the power to make good on their threats will be on a level that we have not seen nor one that we can readily imagine. It will put the oil reserves of the Gulf under their sway. They could easily bring down governments or fold them into their realm. They will inspire and encourage the radicals in the various Islamic communities that they are targeting around the world and they, in turn, will be inspired by the fact that the acquisition of nuclear weapons is a providential sign of the coming “victory of the true believers.” And, of course, they might make good on their listed ideas of ending Zionism. So this is a threat to the entire world and cannot be seen as anything but that.

I said a year and a half ago that the year is 1938 and Iran is Germany and it is racing to acquire nuclear weapons. Well, if that is the case, then we’re in 1939 now.

China Uncomfortable with Nationalist Outburst

China has repeated its calls for its citizens to harness their patriotic feelings for the purposes of economic development.

As reported by Radio Australia, the government's statements seem to indicate that China may be uncomfortable with the nationalist outburst over Tibet ahead of the summer Olympic Games.

And it is some outburst. Clifford Coonan, China Correspondent for the Independent, reports:

From Manchester to Qingdao, Paris to Xi'an, the world is witnessing an extraordinary display of Chinese nationalism, as expatriates and students take to the streets to express their anger about growing anti-Olympic sentiment and attack what they see as biased Western coverage of last month's crackdown in Tibet.

Anti-Chinese protests on the Paris leg of the Olympic torch relay and President Nicolas Sarkozy's threat to boycott the Beijing Games' opening cere-mony have led to demonstrations outside the French-owned Carrefour supermarkets, of which there are 112 in China. In Paris, there were displays of support for the Olympics by expatriates saying, "Love Our China".

Comment: The Key Question Concerning Obama

Dateline USA....

Looking ahead to the general election, whereas Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama may be able to weather criticism of his troubling ties to a former member of the terrorist Weather Underground organization and a 21-year relationship with a racist pastor, the crucial question is this: will Obama, assuming he is the Democratic nominee for President, be able to withstand exposure as the candidate most likely to adopt a policy of appeasement toward nuclear-arming, Islamist Iran?

Anti-Syrian Activists Assassinated in Lebanon

Foreign Confidential....

Syria strikes again.

Two days after Syrian President Bashar Assad met with former US President Jimmy Carter in Damascus, pro-Syrian gunmen shot and killed two members of Lebanon's pro-Western Christian Phalange party that is part of the country's ruling anti-Syrian coalition.

The victims, Salim Assi and Nasri al-Murani, were killed Sunday during an opening of a new party office in the town of Zahle in the Bekaa Valley. three other Phalange activists were wounded in the shooting Sunday.

Lebanese troops were deployed in Zahle and are searching for the attackers.

The deaths came amid a 17-month standoff between Lebanon's Western-backed governing coalition and the Syrian-backed opposition. That impasse has left the country without a president since November, when pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud stepped down at the end of his term with no elected successor.

Parliamentary voting to elect a new president has been delayed 17 times and is now scheduled for this Tuesday. The session is unlikely to take place.

Special Passover Feature: Judaism in China

Jews and Judaism in China have had a long history. Jewish settlers are documented in China as early as the 7th or 8th century CE, but may have arrived during the mid Han Dynasty, or even as early as 231 BCE. Relatively isolated communities developed through the Tang and Song Dynasties (7-12th cent. CE) all the way through the Qing Dynasty (19th cent.), most notably in the Kaifeng Jews (the term "Chinese Jews" is often used in a restricted sense to refer to these communities).

By the time of the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, few if any native Chinese Jews were known to have maintained the practice of their religion and culture. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, however, some international Jewish groups have helped Chinese Jews rediscover their heritage.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Jewish immigrants from around the world arrived with Western commercial and quasi-colonialist influences, particularly in the commercial centers of Shanghai and Hong Kong, which was for a time a British colony. Tens of thousands of Jewish refugees escaping from the 1917 Russian Revolution and the Holocaust in Europe were to find sanctuary in China in successive decades.

Today, with the current expansion of trade and globalization, Jews of many ethnicities from multiple regions of the world have settled permanently and temporarily in China's major cities.

Ho Feng Shan: The Chinese Schindler

Ho Feng Shan came from a poor family, and his father died when Ho was 7 years old. A diligent and hard-working student, he managed to enter the Yali School in the provincial capital of Changsha, and later Yale-in-China University. In 1926 he entered Munich University, where he in 1932 earned a Ph.D. in political economics and graduated Magna cum laude.

In 1935, Ho Feng Shan started his diplomatic career within the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of China (ROC). His first posting was in Turkey. He was appointed First Secretary at the Chinese legation in Vienna in 1937, and when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938 and the legation was turned into a consulate, Ho was assigned the post as Consul-General.

After the "Kristallnacht" in 1938, the situation for the almost 200,000 Austrian Jews got rapidly more difficult, but in order to leave the country they had to provide proof of emigration, usually a visa from a foreign nation or a valid boat ticket. This, however, was difficult and the Evian Conference, in 1938, where 32 countries had failed to take a stand against Nazi Germany, made this even more complicated. Acting against orders of his superior Chen Jie(陳介), the Chinese ambassador to Berlin, Ho, for humanitarian reasons, started to issue visas to Shanghai. At the time it was not necessary to have a visa to enter Shanghai, but it allowed the Jews to leave Austria. Indeed many Jewish families left for Shanghai, whence most of them would later leave for Hong Kong and Australia. He continued to issue these visas until he was ordered to return to China in May 1940.

How many Jews were saved is unknown, but given that Ho issued close to 2,000 visas only during his first half year at his post, claims in the thousands could well be correct.

Later, Ho Feng Shan served as the Republic of China's (ROC) ambassador to other countries, including Egypt, Mexico, Bolivia, and Colombia. After retirement in 1973, Ho settled in San Francisco in the United States, where he wrote his memoirs, 40 Years of my Diplomatic Life (外交生涯四十年) published in 1990.

After his retirement in 1973, the ROC on Taiwan denied Ho his pension on the grounds that he had "not properly accounted for" the equivalent of $US300 in embassy expenses. These charges are widely believed to have been politically motivated. Despite repeated appeals, the ROC in Taiwan government has not exonerated him.

In the 1980s, he returned several times to Mainland China and also visited his alma mater in Changsha during its 80th anniversary in 1986.

Ho Feng Shan died in San Francisco at the age of 96.

Ho's actions in Vienna went unnoticed during his life (save for a black mark in his personnel file for disobeying orders), but were recognized posthumously when he was awarded the title Righteous Among the Nations by the Israeli organization Yad Vashem in 2001. He is the second of only two Chinese to be given this honor; the first was Pan Jun Shun.

Comment: Obama Would Hand Iraq to Iran

Foreign Confidential....

If Barack Obama is elected President of the United States, he will surrender control of Iraq to Iran.

Obama, advised by Jimmy Cater's former National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, believes that a "diplomatic surge" toward Tehran is the key to an orderly withdrawal from Iraq. His view reflects the thinking of the US foreign policy establishment and many senior US military officers.

The concept is inherently obscene and fundamentally flawed. Obscene because it means that US lives and treasure were spent in order to make Islamist Iran--an implacable foe of the US and Western civilization--the most powerful nation in the Middle East. Flawed because an imperialist power like Iran can't be appeased, even if it is allowed to dominate its former enemy, Iraq. Nuclear-arming Iran's aims are clear: the physical destruction of Israel; the expulsion of the US from the Middle East; and strategic parity with Europe.

'World Without America'

Long-term, Iran intends to bring about America's destruction, too. For Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a "world without America" is more than a mere slogan; it is a foreign policy objective. Not for nothing are US analysts and intelligence experts warning that the threat of a nuclear attack on a US city is growing: the danger comes from Shiite Iran as well as from Sunni Al Qaeda. The Islamist rivals have bridged their theological divide quite nicely, thank you, via hatred of their common enemies--the US, its strategic ally, Israel, and the West in general.

And there is more to the nuclear threat, as we have repeatedly reported, than smuggled "suitcase bombs." With North Korean assistance, Iran has developed and tested sea-launched ballistic missile systems that can be concealed aboard seemingly civilian, foreign-flagged cargo ships. There is no known defense against an attack of this kind against a US coastal city. Coordinated attacks on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts would be truly catastrophic.

It seems that the world is again sleeping while a rising regional power with global ambitions--and a totalitarian ideology--prepares a holocaust.

Ayatollah Says Iran Should Defend All Muslims

Foreign Confidential....

One of Iran's top turbaned tyrants said Friday that the country should grow into a military super power to defend all Muslims, following an army parade.

"In a not so distant future, we should reach a point to have the most powerful military equipment in the world so that no one even think about invading our borders." Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said in his prayer sermon carried live on state radio.

"And not only that of the Islamic republic, but also the borders of Islam ... We must defend oppressed Muslims everywhere so that the enemies do not dare to attack Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq."

On Thursday's annual Army Day celebration in Tehran, dozens of fighter jets and other aircraft flew over the parade ground in a bid to show the power of the air force.

Missiles and Death Chants

Also on display, AFP reported, was Iran's Shahab-3 missile, whose range includes Israel and even the fringes of Europe.

The news agency said the cleric also vowed to cheering worshippers, who chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," that their slogans will materialize.

"I tell you that the death of the United States has come. You shouted Death to the Shah and he died," Jannati said, referring to the monarch overthrown by the 1979 Islamic revolution and who died in exile.

"You say Death to Israel and it is dying. You say Death to America and it does not take so long that its death prayer will be said."

Last June, Jannati told an Iranian TV audience: "At the end of the day, we are an anti-American regime. America is our enemy, and we are the enemies of America. The hostility between us is not a personal matter. It is a matter of principle. We are in disagreement over the very principles that underlie our revolution and our Islam."

Carter Meets Terrorist Chief in Damascus

Foreign Confidential....

Dispatch from Jimmy Carter's Terror Tour....

The former US President met exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Damascus Friday despite strong opposition from Israel and the US government.

The US State Department regards the Islamist group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization--a significant designation.

Israel rejects inclusion of Hamas in formal peace talks because of its history of suicide bombings and other acts of terrorism and ongoing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians, and because the group refuses to recognize and vows to physically destroy the Jewish state.

Carter met Meshaal at a Hamas office in the Syrian capital. The meeting was attended by other high-level Hamas leaders, including Musa Abu Marzuq and Mohmmed Nazzal.

Abu Marzuq said Carter and Meshaal would discuss the fate of Corporal Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier captured by Hamas and other Palestinian militants in June 2006.

"They will also hold talks on a truce (with Israel) and ending the sanctions on the Palestinian people," he told an AFP photographer ahead of the meeting.

Meeting with Assad

Carter, who is on a regional tour to promote Middle East peace, earlier met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

While still a pseudo-socialist, secular dictatorship with a cosmopolitan veneer, Syria has been steadily Islamizing, and, according to some observers, may have already passed a point of no return in terms of Islamist infiltration and influence. Carter's talks with Hamas leaders on Syrian soil are almost certain to be seen as a sign of rising Islamist strength--maybe, even, in the eyes of conspiracy theorists, of which there is no shortage in the region, as a sub rosa signal of sorts by elements or factions of the US government.

Exclusive: Middle Eastern sources say Carter assured Assad and Meshaal that Syria and Hamas must be part of any peace agreement.

Moreover, sources say, Carter asserted that important "thought leaders" were slowly coming around to his point of view, and that he was cautiously optimistic that a change in US policy would follow a change in administration.

Sources claim the former President seemed to be hinting that Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama--who favors negotiations with Islamist Iran--was actually inclined to support direct talks with Hamas, even though the White House hopeful has publicly rejected the suggestion and has also criticized Carter for agreeing to meet with the group.

Hamas endorsed Barack Obama for President last Sunday. But his campaign has tried to distance the candidate from the terrorist group.

"Senator Obama has repeatedly rejected and denounced the actions of Hamas, a terrorist organization responsible for the deaths of many innocents, that is dedicated to Israel's destruction," Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor said yesterday.

Tibetan Exiles: Over 100 Arrested in New Protests

India-based Tibetan exile sources say more than 100 Tibetans have been arrested during a fresh protest in northwestern China. Chinese media did not immediately report the incident.

The Tibetan government in exile and the Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy say they have received reports of Thursday's protest in Qinghai province from multiple sources.

The sources said 22 Buddhist monks demonstrated peacefully in Rebkong (Chinese: Tongren) County for the release of fellow monks, from a monastery Rong Gonchen arrested for an April 13 protest.

After police arrested the 22 monks, hundreds of monks and other Tibetans gathered to demand their release. Police reportedly arrested many of those protesters as well and surrounded the monks' monastery.

Xinhua: Government Repairing Monastery

Also Thursday, China's official Xinhua news agency reported that the government is repairing the province's largest Tibetan monastery, Kumbum (Chinese: Ta'er Si). The report said the central government has provided more than $3.5 million for the work.

Chinese security officials say weapons and explosives were found at Tibetan monasteries in the neighboring provinces of Gansu and Sichuan.

But Tibetan exile groups say that firearms discovered were donated by Buddhists as a sign that they had given up hunting.

Monks Deny Weapons Charge

The Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet has released a translation of comments made by monks who disrupted an official media tour of Labrang monastery in Gansu province. The monks denied official claims that monks have been hiding weapons.

Gansu province's Gannan Tibetan region was the site of one of many anti-government protests that sprung up last month in the wake of China's crackdown on unrest in Tibet.

Over 100 monks are being held in Gannan for their alleged involvement in violence there that Xinhua reports injured 94 people and caused some $32 million in damages.

Chinese authorities have arrested more than 2,000 people, including 519 monks in connection with their involvement in riots in northwestern China in March, but most have been released.

Tibet's government in exile says that more than 150 people have died in the Chinese crackdown on monk-led protests. China blames rioters for the deaths of at least 20 people.

US Politicians Ignore Fossil Fuels

Carbon Confidential....

Must reading from Energy Tribune. Editor Michael J. Economides says US politicians are focusing mainly on pie-in-the-sky renewable energy and carbon trading schemes, ignoring the continuing importance of fossil fuels.

It is certain that the United States is in for a shock in energy prices and especially in energy supplies--the likes of which have never been seen or imagined. While high prices can be tolerated to a reasonable extent, all hell will break loose if massive supply disruptions emerge. We are much closer to them than people think, and not because of peak oil, which is still decades away. Those who think that we can conserve ourselves to energy independence need not read any further. They are wrong, and it is pointless to try to show them otherwise.

The first proof positive of trouble to come: it is clear that for all three potential US presidential candidates, Senators John McCain, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton, the primary sources, which provide 87 percent of US energy (oil, gas, and coal) are of no consequence--other than popular notions like freedom from the “tyranny of oil.” Their lack of interest is breathtaking, considering that whoever gets elected will probably be confronted with $120-a-barrel oil.

The candidates have mentioned energy occasionally, and my own anthology of their preciously rare pronouncements contains only the trite mantras of conservation (something that has never played any major role in US total energy demand), and the most unrealistic “alternatives,” such as solar and wind, and the negative-energy-balance biofuels. They have talked about technology and made allegories to putting a man on the moon, but no one has shown how technology, admirable though it may be, can supplant basic laws of thermodynamics. Energy cannot be generated from nothing....

Carter Accuses Israel of Atrocities in Gaza

Foreign Confidential....

Spurred on by his old National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Jimmy Carter is escalating his war of words with Israel--and its strategic ally, the United States.

The demented former US President called the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip a "crime and an atrocity" on Thursday after meeting with Hamas officials, and said US attempts to undermine the Islamist movement Hamas had been counterproductive.

Speaking at the American University in Cairo after talks with Hamas leaders from Gaza, Carter said Palestinians in Gaza were being "starved to death," receiving fewer calories a day than people in the poorest parts of Africa.

'An Abomination'

"It's an atrocity what is being perpetrated as punishment on the people in Gaza. It's a crime... I think it is an abomination that this continues to go on," Carter said.

Israel imposed a blockade on Gaza after Hamas--designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the US State Department--seized power over the impoverished coastal strip last June. Since then, Israel has allowed only basic staples to be transported through the border crossings it controls, into Gaza.

Israel has not accepted Hamas proposals for a truce including an end to Hamas rocket attacks on Israel and to Israeli attacks on Hamas personnel in Gaza and the West Bank. Israeli officials say a truce would enable Hamas to rearm.

Carter accused Israel and his own country, the US, of trying to make the quality of life in Gaza markedly worse than in the West Bank, where the rival moderate Fatah faction retains power.

Sordid History

The former President has a depressingly long history of cozying up to terrorists and anti-US despots.

In May 2002, he journeyed to Havana, where he accused the US government of lying about Castroite Cuba.

His embrace of Communist dictator Fidel Castro came about a month after an op-ed essay by Carter appeared in the New York Times arguing that US aid to Israel should be cut off unless it surrenders to Palestinian demands.

The list of those whom Carter has supported over the years includes: the Communist dictator Ceausescu of Romania (of whom Carter said "Our goals are the same…."); Syrian mass murderer and Soviet ally Hafez al-Assad; Ethiopian mass murderer Mengistu; Castro-aligned Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega; and North Korean Marxist madman Kim Il Sung [of whose totalitarian state with which we fought the Korean War, Carter said "I don’t see that they are an outlaw nation."].

EXCLUSIVE: There is more to the sordid history. During Carter's deeply unpopular, one-term Presidency, his wife, Rosalynn, visited and subsequently supported Jamaica's charismatic, anti-US, pro-Castro Prime Minister, Michael Manley. The First Lady and Manley were so close that at least one European intelligence agency suspected them of having engaged in a physical relationship. The suspicions were put to rest when a foreign journalist with intelligence ties reported that the attraction--at least on Manley's part--was purely political. Besides, the report said, the married Manley was recovering from an "injured organ" resulting from an ugly altercation with his mistress at the time, and was therefore neither in the mood nor the condition for new amorous adventures.

Now It Can Be Told: Jimmy Carter Allowed and Encouraged Anti-Shah Violence Near White House

Foreign Confidential exclusive....

"Well, we couldn't stick with him."

-Former US President Jimmy Carter responding to a question from CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer regarding his administration's policy toward the late Shah of Iran.

The catastrophic Carter administration once allowed and encouraged anti-Shah protesters to riot near the White House in order to embarrass and pressure the pro-American, modernizing monarch into making concessions to an unholy alliance of Marxists and Islamists that were actively plotting his overthrow.

Carter's Mastermind

President Carter's National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, was the mastermind behind the incident, which succeeded in undermining the Shah and emboldening and inspiring his foes. A Polish-born Cold Warrior consumed by hatred of the Soviet Union and obsessed by geopolitical strategic theories reminiscent of the Nazi era regarding the so-called Eurasian "super-continent," Brzezinski had exploited Carter's concern for human rights to turn him against the Shah and convince the President that the United States urgently needed to make friends with the "team of destiny"--political Islam--in order to keep oil-rich Iran's neighbor, the Soviet Union, at bay.

The Shah had no idea that Carter had turned against him. The Iranian monarch and his internationally admired Empress, Farah Diba, visited the Carter White House in November 1977. In a shocking betrayal that was seen around the world, the royal couple were greeted by nearly 4,000 Marxist-Islamist Iranian students, many wearing masks, waving clubs, and carrying banners festooned with the names of Iranian terrorist organizations. The rioters were allowed within 100 feet of the White House, where they attacked other Iranians and Americans gathered to welcome the Shah. To separate the Iranian factions, the police used tear gas, some of which wafted over the White House lawn just as Carter was formally welcoming the Shah. The gas settled, causing the high-ranking figures to cry, wheeze, and cough. Televised images of the two heads of state wiping tears from their eyes were widely distributed and noted in Iran and across the Middle East.

Full-Court Press

Carter and Brzezinski and other US officials met with the Shah, his ambassador to Washington, Ardeshir Zahedi, and other members of the Iranian delegation for 90 minutes. The subsequent White House communique did not reflect what transpired at the meeting--a full-court press by the US for radical reform.

Back in Iran, when the head of SAVAK saw a videotape of the incident, he concluded that the US had abandoned the Shah. The secret police chief then proceeded to betray the Shah by making a secret deal with his implacable foe, the Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini, whose forces drove the Shah from power two years later.

Brzezinski's "Washington tears," as the incident became known, had achieved its aim.

China Says Weapons Found in Tibet Monasteries

Chinese authorities say they have found stockpiles of weapons and explosives at 11 Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the country's northwestern province of Gansu.

Gansu province's Gannan Tibetan region was the site of one of many anti-government protests that sprung up last month in the wake of China's crackdown on unrest in Tibet.

China's official Xinhua news agency says Wednesday police found bullets, guns, dynamite and satellite receivers during searches of the monasteries in Jone and Xiahe counties, and Hezuo City.

Over 100 monks are being held in Gannan for their alleged involvement in violence there that Xinhua says injured 94 people and caused some $32 million in damages.

News of the arrests comes on the same day that China announced its plans to build a new airport in Gannan.

New Airport Announced

Xinhua said the $100 million airport would be completed by 2010.

The Chinese government argues that its rule over Tibet and other Tibetan areas in the country has brought much needed development and commerce to those regions. Critics say government policies are wiping out Tibetan culture and promoting the migration of Han Chinese to the country's remote regions.

Chinese authorities have arrested more than 2,000 people, including 519 monks in connection with their involvement in riots in northwestern China last month, but most have been released.

Tibet's government-in-exile says that more than 150 people have died in the Chinese crackdown on monk-led protests. China blames rioters for the deaths of at least 20 people.
