US Using Taiwan to 'Push Back' at China

Washington's arms deal with Taipei is an attempt to "push back" against a "muscular" China, as reported here.

China Confidential analysts expect Beijing to push back--by backing Iran even more than China has to date.

Ironically, the Obama administration started with a soft approach to China. Like everything the administration has done in terms of national security and defense, the policy has boomeranged. China sees Barack Obama as a weakling and an amateur; its take on the U.S. President recalls the Soviet perception of JFK, which led to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis--a near-catastrophe.

Understand, as Obama likes to say, that China is capable of attacking Taiwan in accord with a reunification law that actually mandates use of force to regain control over the island, which China regards as a "renegade" province. Not for nothing has China amassed an ever-growing arsenal of ballistic missiles aimed at Taiwan.

China is also capable of using its nuclear-armed vassal, North Korea, to create problems for the United States.

Crypto-Islamist Turkish PM Again Slams Israel

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says losing Turkey's friendship would hurt Israel. Click here for the story.

He made his remarks in an interview in which he again lashed out at Israel, leading this reporter to wonder: with "friends" like Islamist-leaning Turkey, who needs enemies?

U.S. support for Turkey's crypto-Islamist government by both the Bush and Obama administrations is backfiring. The Turkish military, traditional guardian of the country's secular system, has been prevented from intervening out of fear of antagonizing the United States and the European Union, which has allowed acceleration of Turkey's Islamizing trend--and tilt toward Iran.

The loss of Turkey is a serious blow to both Israel and the U.S.

While the problem predates Obama, as mentioned above, it has been made worse by his engagement (appeasement) policy toward nuclear-arming Iran and outreach to "the Muslim world," which has effectively encouraged Islamists to see themselves--and to be seen--as an ascendant, supranational power on a par with the superpowers.

New Dead Sea Drilling Data May Indicate Presence of Huge, Heavy and Light Oil Resources in Israel

Good news for energy-challenged Israel.

China Confidential analysts believe that test results from a new oil exploration well that was drilled in Israel north of the Dead Sea are likely to support the theory that the great salt lake--a unique body of water associated with oil since antiquity--sits atop a vast pool of heavy crude oil, which probably covers an even larger reservoir of light, or conventional, crude.

The partners in the Tzuk Tamrur 4 oil well--Zerah Oil And Gas Explorations LP (TASE: ZRAH), Delek Drilling LP (TASE: DEDR.L), and Avner Oil and Gas LP (TASE: AVNR.L)--are expected to announce the test results early this week.

Seized North Korean Arms Were Bound for Iran

Thailand has confirmed in a confidential report that the North Korean arms seized last month by Thai authorities were bound for North Korea's longtime partner in nuclear/missile crime, Iran. Click here for the story.

Question: Did China know about the arms shipment?

The answer is yes, of course. North Korea is China's vassal. The two countries are as close as lips and teeth. The Stalinist/Kimist/criminal regime in Pyongyang could not exist without Beijing's backing.

But China is the elephant in the room when it comes to nuclear-armed North Korea--and its alliance with nuclear-arming, Islamist Iran. American, European, and Japanese officials are apparently too scared of, or too intimidated by, or too beholden or in debt to (in the case of economically declining America) rising China to raise the issue of North Korea's illicit dealings with Iran, which include, among other things, allowing Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps officers to attend North Korean nuclear tests and joint, North Korean-Iranian development and testing of concealed, cargo-ship-to-shore, ballistic missile launch systems.

Iran Plans to Murder Nine More Protesters

From the Global Post:

Iran hanged two opposition protesters on Thursday and sentenced nine more to death for taking part in widespread rallies against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad following last June's presidential election.

It is a stark reminder to members of the Iranian political opposition and social activists — for whom exile is not an option due to financial or other constraints — of the risks of voicing dissent in the Islamic Republic.

While the executions prove the extreme measures the state is willing to take to suppress the opposition movement, many of those accused of dissident behavior have experienced retribution by other means. Factory workers, school teachers and university professors have been fired from their jobs as a direct result of expressing dissenting opinions.

Israel Says Slain Terrorist Was Big Arms Smuggler

Israel won't say if it bumped off the Islamist terrorist, a major arms smuggler for Hitlerian Hamas in the Palestinian terror-state called Gaza (which U.S. President Barack Obama wants to expand to include the disputed, liberated lands of the so-called West Bank and East Jerusalem).

Israel will only say that the slain terrorist, who met his end in Dubai, had been sought by Israel for decades.

China Confidential intelligence experts say Israel was almost certainly responsible for the assassination of the terrorist.

Bringing Shame to Japan, Toyota Continues to Lie

The Japanese automaker, a true titan of industry, continues to stall, lie, misrepresent, ruining its reputation and threatening that of all Japanese companies.

The car company claims a fix is "coming soon" while ignoring reports that the stuck pedal may only account for 5% of sudden acceleration incidents involving Toyota vehicles, as reported earlier.

And the stuck gas pedal recall is separate from a previously disclosed Toyota problem in which the gas pedal can become caught on the edge of the removable floor mat.

Obama Omitted Mention of Israel's Aid to Haiti ... and a Leading, American Jewish Democrat Noticed

Marty Peretz, editor-in-chief of The New Republic, blogs:

The fact is that, next to our country, Israel sent the largest contingent of trained rescue workers, doctors, and other medical personnel. The Israeli field hospital was the only one on the ground that could perform real surgery, which it did literally hundreds of times, while delivering--as of last week--at least 16 babies, including one premature infant and three caesarians. The first 250-odd Israelis were real professionals, and they were supplemented by others, also professionals. And to these can be added the many organized Jews from the Diaspora who, in solidarity with Israel, also went on a work pilgrimage, an aliyah, in solidarity with Haiti.

It's not that Israeli participation in the Haiti horror was being kept secret. I myself saw it reported several times on television—on ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN.

So didn't Obama notice? For God's sake, everybody noticed the deep Israeli involvement. I understand that Obama doesn't like Middle East narratives that do not contain "one side and the other side" equal valence. But he couldn't have that here. The Arabs don't care a fig, not for their impoverished and backward own, and certainly not for strangers. That's why their presence in Haiti amounted to a couple of bucks from Saudi Arabia and maybe from some other sheikhs.

An afterthought: Who would want Arab participation in the rescue effort? This was serious work and dangerous work. Amateurs weren't welcome.

Yes, I think that the labors of the Israelis were edited out of Obama's speech, either by his speechwriters (who have made dissing Israel their forté) or by his own oh-so-delicate but dishonest censoring mechanism.

China Suspends Military Exchanges With US

China has halted military exchanges with the United States and is threatening U.S. defense companies with sanctions, as reported by AP here.

The strained relations are coming at about the worst possible time for the U.S., which needs China's cooperation regarding Iran and North Korea and "a whole host" of economic issues (to use one of President Obama's favorite phrases).

Is Toyota's Sticky Pedal Story Phony?

Is Toyota lying about the cause of sudden acceleration in the bestselling vehicles it has recalled and stopped selling?

Is the sticky pedal story phony?

is the recall a red herring?

The answer to all of the above, apparently, is yes.

Contrary to Toyota's representations, the sticky pedal explanation seems to account for only 5% of the company's reported 2,000 runaway car cases over the last decade.

UAW, Teamsters Call Toyota 'Danger to America'

Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa and United Auto Workers (UAW) Vice President Bob King joined representatives from labor, environmental and consumer groups outside the Embassy of Japan in Washington today to call on the Japanese government to hold Toyota accountable for waging an attack on thousands of good-paying jobs in the United States.

In addition to endangering 5,000 middle class jobs in the carhaul industry, Toyota is also planning to close its New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) assembly plant in Fremont, CA, which will mean a loss of up to 50,000 jobs at NUMMI and suppliers and other supporting businesses.

The delegation delivered a letter from UAW Vice President Jimmy Settles and Hoffa to Prime Minister of Japan Yukio Hatoyama following the speaking program. In the letter, the leaders of UAW and the Teamsters expressed concern that Toyota's plan to abandon workers and communities will negatively affect America's perception of Japan, and calls on the Japanese government to meet with them and with Toyota management.

King, who was representing UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and Settles, told the crowd that California led the nation in "Cash for Clunkers" sales in 2009, and that Toyota sold more cars under this program than any other auto maker.

"It's outrageous that the number one-selling car in Cash for Clunkers was the Corolla, the car that is manufactured in the NUMMI plant. After receiving more money in this bailout program than any other company, Toyota is turning its back on American workers and American taxpayers by closing the plant in the state where they sell the most cars in the U.S., shipping these jobs to Japan, and then importing the cars back to the United States for sale," said King.

"Toyota management is seeking to move work from auto transport companies that have delivered their new cars and trucks for decades," Hoffa said. "The loss of this work could lead to the destruction of the largest auto transport companies in the country and the loss of thousands of good, middle class jobs. Toyota promised to support American communities; they're instead threatening the very types of good jobs that our communities need in this time of economic crisis."

"Toyota's plant closure plan in California has betrayed American workers and exhibited a disdain for our federal programs like cash for clunkers that directly and handsomely benefited Toyota," said Dr. Brent Blackwelder, President Emeritus of Friends of the Earth US. "Toyota's decision to shift production to Japan will dramatically increase shipping miles to California for its new vehicles and is inconsistent with a worldwide effort to reduce carbon footprints."

Toyota is likewise losing the trust of the American public by abandoning its commitment to safety and being less than forthright about some of its problematic vehicles, said auto safety advocate Sean Kane, president and founder of Safety Research & Strategies.

"The now well-publicized sudden acceleration problem with some Toyota and Lexus vehicles has actually been festering for a number of years, but Toyota neglected the issue," said Kane. "Now it's trying to repair its image with a series of recalls that few believe will actually repair the many vehicles affected. It's pretty clear that there are a multitude of defects contributing to these unintended accelerating incidents that, unfortunately, have resulted in deaths and injuries."

"The Toyota Fremont, CA NUMMI plant is where the popular Toyota Corolla and Tacoma pickup truck are made, and it has among the best productivity and quality of any assembly plant in the U.S.," King said. "Abandoning this facility and endangering tens of thousands of jobs is a betrayal of Toyota's promise to support communities, and a betrayal of its workers, middle class American jobs and our economic recovery."

Toyota Pedal Supplier Says Automaker's Design is At Fault, as Massive Model Recall Spreads to China

CTS, the U.S. company that supplies the sticky--and potentially deadly--gas pedals to Toyota, insists the automaker's design is at fault, as reported here. Toyota is racing to come up with a fix.

In the meantime, the recall by the world's biggest car manufacturer of its most popular models has spread to Europe, as reported earlier, and to China, as reported here, causing rival Ford--which is increasing market share--to stop sales in China of its full-sized, classic Transit diesel van after learning that its accelerator pedals are also made by CTS.

And ... U.S. lawmakers are intensifying their probe of the Toyota recall. Read all about the Congressional investigation here.

Can Toyota recover from its manmade disaster? Probably not. The unprecedented sales stoppage and recall has ruined the company's reputation for quality--and corporate ethics. Toyota executives appear to have conspired to downplay and perhaps even cover up an extremely serious--life-threatening--problem. It does not get much worse than that.

Desperate to Save Democratic Party and His Failing Presidency, Obama Delivers Silly Campaign Speech

End of story.

UPDATE: Read "Obama Gropes for a Strategy" here.

Yes He Can Get Something Right! Obama Plans to Spend $8 Billion on Job-Creating, High-Speed Rail

The job creation portion of President Obama's State of the Union Speech will focus on spending money in order to build important, new industries with permanent, well-paying jobs, instead of simply throwing money at bureaucracy and public works projects.

Enter high-speed rail. Obama will unveil an $8 billion "down payment" to provide high-speed rail between 13 major U.S. corridors, and to upgrade existing rail infrastructure on the way to eventual high-speed rail.

Great. At last, he gets it. And so will the American people, this reporter predicts. The idea of flying between congested New York and clogged Chicago, for example, is downright stupid, given the direct, downtown-to-downtown, fast-train technology that has existed in Europe and Japan for decades.

Now, if Obama will only dump appeasement of Islamist Iran--and Islamism in general--and phony, global warming-fueled green energy schemes and dreams that produce relatively few jobs in favor of a strong national defense policy and ... real ... energy development, including domestic oil and gas and coal, he could still save his Presidency ... and the country. Can't hurt to dream--for a day or two.

Back to rail. Here's a suggestion for New York State's unpopular Governor and two U.S. Senators, all liberal Democrats: Push Obama to spend small money, relatively speaking, on a long overdue rail improvement project--namely, extending electrification of the Metro-North, Harlem Line commuter rail system all the way from Manhattan's Grand Central Station to the line's northern terminus, in rural Wassaic, NY, in northern Dutchess County. Presently, the line is electric only to the Southeast station at the southern tip of Putnam County, an outer suburb of New York City. Extending electrification--the cost is peanuts compared to building high-speed rail--would allow residents in what are now for the most part second home markets to commute to work in the city. The upgrading would also boost real estate prices by putting areas farther to the north within the second home, New York City orbit--no mean achievement in the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

"Fast and Strange Turn" By Doomed Ethiopian Jetliner Recalls Suicide Crash of EgyptAir 490

A report--read it here--that the pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines passenger jet that plummeted into the Mediterranean Sea Monday shortly after taking off from Beirut airport in thunderstorms and lightning made a "very fast and strange turn" is fueling speculation that terrorism may have caused the crash, which is believed to have killed all 90 people on board the Boeing 737-800.

The pilot flew in the opposite direction from that recommended by the control tower, which asked him to correct his path before Flight ET409, bound for Addis Ababa, disappeared from the radar.

The pilot's name has not been released. But the turn he took recalls the destruction of EgyptAir 490, which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on October 31, 1999, about 60 miles south of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, in international waters, killing all of the 217 people on board.

Egyptian investigators concluded that the aircraft crashed as a result of mechanical failure. But U.S. investigators concluded the Boeing 767 was deliberately crashed in an apparent suicide by the 59-year-old co-pilot, Gamil al-Batouti, who had been left in control of the plane when the pilot left the cockpit. The co-pilot's last recorded words were, "Tawfik ala Allah"--Arabic for "I put my faith in God."

Ethiopian Airlines has the best safety record among Africa's notoriously unsafe carriers. But Ethiopia was deeply involved in supporting the government of Somalia, a failed state, against Islamist insurgents and terrorists associated with Al Qaeda.

B’nai Brith Canada Seeks Apology from Liberal MP Over Remarks About Minister’s Auschwitz Trip

B’nai Brith Canada--the Canadian Jewish community's foremost human rights agency since 1875--today voiced its condemnation of Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj’s remarks about Minister Jason Kenney’s trip to Poland to participate in a ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The Toronto-area Liberal MP referred to the Citizenship and Immigration Minister’s trip as a “jaunt” and suggested he would have been better served by visiting Haiti.

In 2006, Wrzesnewskyj was forced to resign his post as deputy foreign affairs critic after he suggested Canada should have direct dealing with Hezbollah, a designated terrorist entity.

“It is absolutely despicable that Wrzesnewskyj would characterize Minister Kenney’s trip to Auschwitz as a ‘jaunt,’” said Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B’nai Brith Canada. “Minister Kenney and the government should be praised for their decision to go to Poland and participate in a ceremony which pays tribute to the memory and honour of the victims of the Holocaust."

Dimant, who has been involved in organized Jewish affairs for more than four decades, added: “While we can all agree that the Haitian people deserve tremendous assistance from the global community, Wrzesnewskyj has gotten it wrong. The people and government of Canada have led the world in terms of their generosity in providing relief for the victims of that tragedy. B’nai Brith Canada has its own Haiti relief fund through which many Canadians have also generously donated. To suggest that Minister Kenney should put off his trip to Poland and miss the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the death camp where millions of people were mercilessly slaughtered is nothing short of outrageous and Wrzesnewskyj needs to apologize.”

UPDATE: The MP apologized for criticizing the cabinet minister's visit to Poland, saying he wasn't aware the trip was to include a visit to Auschwitz.

N. Korea May Fire More Missiles to Upstage Obama

North Korea may be preparing to test-fire missiles, as reported here.

China Confidential believes the North is likely to time the launch to upstage tomorrow night's State of the Union address by U.S. President Barack Obama.

More important, the North, as China Confidential predicted on January 18--read the piece here--is likely to raise tensions on the Korean Peninsula in order to divert attention from Iran, Pyongyang's partner in nuclear/missile crime, and pressure the United States into scrapping sanctions on the North.

Clinton Will Quit if Iran Gets Nukes

Washington insiders say U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will resign if Iran becomes a nuclear-armed nation.

Clinton will step down to distance herself from Barack Obama's appeasement of Iran (and Islamism in general) in order to be able to challenge him for the Democratic Party's Presidential nomination in 2012.

Clinton is also likely to resign if there is another Islamist terrorist attack on the United States or a U.S. target and the incident does not cause the Obama administration to abandon its soft approach to terrorism, which includes treating alien enemy combatants as common criminals entitled to civilian court trials, lawyers, and plea bargains.

A veteran political analyst with strong Democratic ties tells China Confidential: "Hillary is a rich woman who is still young enough to become the first woman President of the United States. She does not need to be identified with failure and defeat."

Partial Burqa Ban Better than No Burqa Ban

A French parliamentary panel stopped short of recommending a total ban on barbaric burqas. But a partial ban is better than no ban. Click here for the report from Paris, a European capital under siege from the Muslim/Islamist onslaught that threatens to drown the Continent in barbarism and backwardness.

Astonishingly, U.S. President Barack Obama actually intervened in the issue last year. He backed burqa-wearing in France as part of his odious outreach (another code word for appeasement) to "the Muslim world"--a nation, according to Islamists, that is united by Islamic law to a degree that transcends all other legal systems, political boundaries, and national and ethnic differences.

Obama has also supported Islamist-leaning Turkey's bid for European Union membership, even though the United States is not an EU member.

Politically Correct Pentagon Report Ignores Islam

Incredibly, the politically correct Pentagon report on the Fort Hood massacre by an Islamist terrorist traitor ignores Islam. Click here and here.

IBD has this to say:

The 86-page report, "Protecting the Force: Lessons from Fort Hood," in fact does little to protect troops, because it never cites jihad or anything related to Islamic terror.

Only a single page is dedicated to the core question of how, in the middle of a two-front war on Islamic terror, an enemy sympathizer full of boiling hatred for the U.S. managed to infiltrate the officer corps and then telegraph his violent intent against "infidels" without being detected by counterintelligence. Even that page — under the legalese heading, "Oversight of the Alleged Perpetrator" — sidesteps the issue of Islamic radicalism in the ranks.

Secret Report: Iran Could Make an A-Bomb in 2010

Unless it is stopped, Iran will be capable of producing a truck-sized, atomic bomb this year, as reported here. Iran's next goal: nuclear warheads.

Obama's solution: diplomacy for its own sake and appeals for new sanctions.

Was Obama Elected to Lead the Muslim World?

Looking ahead to the State of the Union speech, this reporter wonders: Was Barack Hussein Obama, who was born a Muslim according to Islamic law, which he is inclined to respect, elected President of the United States or President of the so-called Muslim world?

The answer, of course, is that Obama was elected President of the United States; but based on his performance during his first year in office, one would think he was elected to lead the world's Muslims, supposedly united by "the Holy Koran," as Obama insists on referring to Islam's central religious text, to a degree that allegedly transcends all political boundaries and non-Islamic legal systems as well as all differences in nationality, ethnicity, race, and class.

Obama has given enormous credence to the menacing, Muslim world concept--the bedrock of Islamist ideology--while achieving nothing of importance for the American people. He has produced no new jobs, created no new industries, initiated no new programs or policies that resonate with and inspire ordinary Americans. He has, however, helped the Muslim world, also known as the Ummah, or Muslim nation, enormously by elevating its status to the level of a globe-spanning superpower, allowing its most powerful "Islamic republic"--a monstrous tyranny that muses openly about a world without America and Israel--to come closer to acquiring atomic arms, and downgrading the war against Islamist terrorism to the level of a mere law enforcement challenge. The latter initiative involves banning the W word--war--altogether and treating enemy combatant terrorists, such as the Al Qaeda war criminals responsible for carrying out the 9/11 mega-attacks, and the Nigerian, Christmas Day airplane attacker, as common criminals entitled to civilian court trials, public defenders, and, incredible as this may seem, plea bargains.

Conservative-leaning U.S. voters are outraged by Obama's obvious attempts at expanding the power of the federal government, raising taxes, and crippling U.S. industry through crushing overregulation and the choking-off of energy (the Democrats' despised "fossil fuels" on which our civilization runs and will run for the foreseeable future). The outrage is more than justified. But all voters should be alarmed by Obama's foreign and counterterrorism policies, which are effectively increasing the nation's vulnerability to threats that were more or less unthinkable before 9/11, but now seem more and more likely to actually occur.

Understand, as Obama likes to say, that while the U.S. is a big, powerful country, the threats it faces border on the existential. Could the U.S. economy withstand waves of suicide bombings and Mumbai-style swarming assaults? Maybe. Could the U.S. economy recover from a nuclear blast in a high-population area, or a major biological attack on the homeland? Probably not. Could the U.S. as a nation survive an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack--the increasingly plausible detonation of a nuclear warhead at high altitude above U.S. soil in order to wipe out the country's communications and electronics systems? The truly terrifying answer, according to many defense and national security experts, is no. An EMP attack would overnight plunge the world's mightiest military power back into the 19th century. Millions of Americans would die from lack of food, water, electricity, medicines, and heat. Those who somehow survive the chaos would long for the days when it was still possible to argue passionately about health care reform (or media coverage of the Tiger Woods scandal).

If an EMP attack seems far-fetched, bear in mind that a cargo ship with a concealed, containerized launch system could fire the necessary nuclear-tipped missile--or missiles--that thousands of cargo ships, flying flags of convenience, approach U.S. coastal waters every day, that there is no known way to defend U.S. (or any other) cities against sea-based, ballistic missile attacks, and that Iran and North Korea are believed to have successfully test-fired missiles from cargo vessels. For what purpose have they done this?

Does Obama know--or care? Observing the President, this reporter often thinks that he inhabits a different planet, or, at the very least, a different country from the one he is supposed to be leading and protecting.

Haiti Death Toll Rises to 150,000

The Haitian government says the confirmed death toll from the massive earthquake that devastated the capital nearly two weeks ago has risen to 150,000.

The horrific estimate does not include such outlying areas as Jacmel, where many other bodies are believed to be buried under rubble.

Authorities say the final toll will probably reach 200,000.

The government officially called off search and rescue operations on Friday, but international rescue teams pulled a man from the rubble of a grocery store in Port-au-Prince on Saturday.

Warning Iran Against Using Nuclear Weapons Should be Part of Obama's State of the Union

Given Iran's ties to terrorist groups and history of sponsoring terrorism, there is only one way to possibly deter the Islamist country from directly or indirectly using nuclear weapons against its avowed enemies, the United States and Israel--a way that could even at this late date still cause the turbaned tyranny to think twice before developing the weapons of mass destruction in the first place.

U.S. President Barack Obama should as soon as practical (his forthcoming State of the Union address would be a good occasion) tell Iran that should it choose to become a nuclear weapons state it would automatically be held responsible for any atomic attack of any kind by terrorists against the U.S. or Israel. More specifically, Obama should state publicly that a nuclearized Iran would be obliterated (to use Hillary Clinton's controversial but apt term) should terrorists attack the U.S. or Israel--even anonymously--with any sort of nuclear device, including bombs and warheads of any size or type. The President should add that U.S. retaliation would be immediate and unprecedented (to use one of his favorite words), with no time-out for press conferences, prayer meetings, and healing sessions. Within hours of an atomic attack on the U.S. or Israel, Iran would simply cease to exist as a nation--probably, for all time.

Obama should also add that the U.S. would also not hesitate to obliterate a nuclearized Iran in order to prevent nuclear attacks on the U.S. or Israel should intelligence support the case for preemptive strikes. Given the choice between mass death in Iran or mass death in the U.S. or Israel, the Commander-in-Chief should say, the U.S. would choose mass death in Iran.

Having handed Iran a crucial additional year to develop nuclear weapons, Obama owes the American people and their ally Israel a meaningful deterrence policy. If not now, when?

Bulletin Columnist Recommends China Confidential

Thank you, Herb Denenberg!

The widely-read and referenced columnist for the Philadelphia-based Bulletin has recommended and linked to China Confidential. Click here, and scroll down to "Mandate No. 9."

Herb's hard-hitting column is must reading for liberty lovers across America (and Canada). An excerpt from this week's column:

Mr. Obama is on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of this mandate. He has done the opposite of everything needed to make our nation safe. He betrays the Poles and Czechs by abandoning the promised missile defense program for their countries, and appeases the Russians. He spends money on every whacko project favored by some Democratic Party favorites, but cuts back on missile defense at the very time the North Koreans and Iranians are improving their missile capabilities. Instead of subjecting enemy combatants to questioning to get the intelligence information needed to save lives, he gives them Miranda rights and lawyers. He bootlicks our enemies and slaps around our friends and allies.

US Releases Two Gitmo Detainees to Algeria Despite North African Nation's Alarming Al Qaeda Presence

Bridget Johnson reports:

The Department of Justice announced Thursday evening that two detainees from the Guantanamo Bay prison have been released to Algeria.

The Algerian nationals, Hasan Zemiri and Adil Hadi al Jazairi Bin Hamlili, were returned to the Algerian government upon agreement of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Departments of Defense, State, Justice and Homeland Security....

Algeria has seen an increased terrorist presence in the past few years with the activities of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, an officially al-Qaeda sanctioned affiliate that battles the Algerian government in order to forcibly establish an Islamic state as well as attacking European and American targets. Some analysts have expressed concern about AQIM's growing strength and potential to branch out into attacking overseas targets.

Understanding the Left's Love Affair with Islamism

An analysis of left-wing tolerance ... of terrorism.

This startling dalliance – about which the American people know very little since it is never discussed in the mainstream media - is already having a dramatic effect on Washington’s willingness to confront the radical Islamist threat that is certain to get worse. If proof is needed, a quick look at the officially sanctioned White House speech code reveals that not only are ‘Islamic’ and ‘terrorism’ now considered completely unrelated, but “terrorism” itself has been declared non-existent by government fiat. And it is not just administration spinmeisters and the pinstripes at Foggy Bottom that have been infected by this reality-denying affliction; the very officials whose job it is to assess the terrorist threat are no longer willing to admit publicly that such a thing even exists.

Obamao Mauls Wall Street

Only three days after Massachusetts voters shocked the nation by electing a Republican to the people's seat....

U.S. equities declined sharply Friday as investors showed they were clearly worried about President Barack Obama's bank plan.

Uncertainty about the confirmation of Ben Bernanke for a second term as Federal Reserve chairman added to the gloom-and-doom mood on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 216.90 points or 2.09% to finish at 10,389.88. The S&P 500 slumped 24.72 points or 2.21% to close at 1,091.76. The Nasdaq Composite plummeted 60.41 points or 2.67% to 2,205.29.

Obama on Thursday proposed sweeping new rules aimed at separating riskier proprietary trading from commercial banking. Obama said banks would be prohibited from what he called "proprietary trading operations, unrelated to serving customers."

Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke's prospects for a second term became cloudier Friday after two Senate Democrats said that they would oppose him.

Holocaust-Denying Priest Bashing Israel

He's back--British Bishop Richard WIlliamson--the Holocaust-denying, excommunicated Catholic priest, who is admired by neo-Nazis the world over.

His new target--no surprise here--is Israel, the modern Jewish State that was miraculously reborn, against all odds, in the aftermath of World War II and Nazi Germany's industrialized genocide.

The man is a monster ... and ... intelligence experts say ... an agent of influence for Islamist front groups as well as neo-Nazis. The Islamist-neo-Nazi alliance is yet another taboo topic for the liberal/left-wing, mainstream media that is ironically bent on backing right-wing political Islam, the clerical fascist creed known as Islamism, in order to wipe out Israel, drive the United States from the Middle East, and cripple capitalism.

Islamist Terrorist Attack on UK 'Highly Likely'

The United Kingdom on Friday raised the terrorism-threat level to "severe," signifying that a terrorist attack is "highly likely," according to information posted on the Home Office website.

The government did not say why the threat level was elevated. Severe is just below the top level of "critical," which means "an attack is expected imminently."

The UK has five threat levels--critical, severe, "substantial," "moderate," and "low."

NY Times Takes Aim at German Support for Israel

The New York Times, which opposed Israel's creation and has tried hard in recent decades to bring about its dismantlement or destruction, is taking aim at Germany's support for the Jewish State. Click here to read a particularly odious piece. The writer is clearly upset that the German chancellor wants to move even closer to Israel, in sharp contrast with Islamist-appeasing Europeans who regard its miraculous rebirth in the aftermath of the Holocaust as a mistake that should never have been allowed to happen. An excerpt:

But as far as the Middle East is concerned, Mrs. Merkel has paid scant attention to the miserable living conditions of Palestinians in Gaza as well as Israel’s settlements and detention policies. German legislators and analysts say that of all chancellors of the postwar period, Mrs. Merkel is considered the most pro-Israeli. “The chancellor is particularly close to Israel,” said one conservative legislator, Ruprecht Polenz, who is chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Parliament.

Israel's Cabinet recently convened for the first time in Berlin, the former capital of the Nazi regime, for a special joint session with the German government. The extraordinary event, laden with meaning and symbolism, highlighted the two nations' strong relationship six decades after the Holocaust.

Why Won't Obama Engage O'Reilly?

After a year of trying to engage (appease) Iranian maniac-in-chief Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, U.S. President Barack Obama is apparently still unwilling to engage (be interviewed by) Fox News commentator and bestselling author Bill O'Reilly, even though his nightly interview show, with about seven million viewers, is America's highest rated, cable TV news program.

Why won't Obama--the President who practically hugged Hugo Chavez--appear on O'Reilly's show?

AP Article Supports China Confidential Forecast

An AP article supports the China Confidential 2010 forecast that terrorism will replace the economy as the leading issue. "Wobbly" is an interesting--and ironic--word choice, given conservative suspicions regarding Obama's ideological biases. Check out the definitions here.

South Korean Human Rights Group Says North Has 200,000 Political Prisoners; Families Incarcerated

South Korea's government-funded human rights watchdog has issued its first report on widespread abuses in North Korea. The report reflects a significant shift in South Korea's approach to Pyongyang.

The National Human Rights Commission report issued Wednesday says the number of North Korean political prison camps has declined, but the number of people being detained in them is still high.

Kim Hyung-wan, a policy director with the commission, says the camps began operating in the late 1950s, and there were 13 of them in 1970. After 1980, Kim adds, the number dropped to six camps, which currently are believed to hold 200,000 prisoners.

Human rights organizations say the North routinely incarcerates entire families for minor political infractions by one member, such as damaging a photo of leader Kim Jong Il, or humming a South Korean pop song.

The camps also punish those caught trying to leave North Korea, or who have been forcibly returned from China.

Kim says around 2000, the punishments differed based on the motivation for defecting. However, he says over the past three years, the punishment for attempting to defect has grown harsher.

This is the first time the South Korean commission has reported on abuses North Koreans face in their own country. Kay Seok, a researcher in Seoul for Human Rights Watch, says such a report has been long awaited.

"It is certainly one step in the right direction, and a welcome change," Kay says.

Report Reflects Policy Change

The report reflects South Korea's willingness to confront the North publicly on human rights issues since the inauguration of conservative President Lee Myung-bak two years ago.

The government-funded commission remained silent on North Korean human rights under two prior South Korean administrations, which had a policy of engaging Pyongyang and avoided openly criticizing it.

Seok points out during those years, the commission said what went on in North Korea was beyond its mandate.

"Which actually conflicts with the fact that the South Korean government has been accepting and resettling North Korean refugees all along … under the South Korean constitution, which defines the entire Korean peninsula as the South's territory. So their logic was not very convincing," Kay says.

Wednesday's report comes on the second day of North-South talks, and amid new tensions. A few days ago, Pyongyang responded to reports of a South Korean contingency plan for instability in the North with threats of what Pyongyang described as a "holy war."

And on Wednesday, the South's defense minister said the South would be ready to preemptively strike North Korea if it were certain that Pyongyang was about to launch a nuclear attack.

US Intel Chief Confirms Christmas Bomber Should Have Been Treated as a Terrorist, Not a 'Suspect'

Vindication for critics of the Obama administration's soft approach to terrorism.

The nation's top intelligence chief concedes the Nigerian Islamist who tried to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day should have been treated as a terrorism detainee and not as a civilian crime suspect. Click here for the story.

The alien enemy combatant has been given a public defender and is eligible for a plea bargain in line with the administration's apparent determination to downgrade the war on Islamist terror to the level of a law enforcement challenge. Every effort has been made to basically ban the W word on the grounds that referring to the conflict, or struggle, as a war plays into the hands of Al Qaeda--the only Islamist group the administration has ruled out engaging--by inflaming Muslim sensibilities.

Today's development is the latest flip, or flop, on the part of the administration, which has had to admit to a "systemic failure," as the President has put it, in preventing the botched bombing before it could get off the ground--literally--after first insisting that the system worked just fine.
