Sierra Leone Peacekeepers in Somalia

Peacekeeping military officers from Sierra Leone have reached Somalia’s southwestern region of Gedo, according to RBC Radio. Diyad Abdi Kalil, a leading officer of Somalia government forces in the region, said Saturday that they met with the officers from Sierra Leone accompanied by Kenyan officials.

Sierra Leone promised it would send its first deployment into Somalia in June 2012 as part of the African Union mission funded by the United Nations. The Sierra Leone 850-man contingent will join the Kenya Defence Forces in Jubba and Gedo regions in pursuit of Al Qaeda-connected Al Shabab rebels.
