Russia and the United States seem to be talking to, or at, each other through the media. Why? There clearly is an urgent need for real diplomacy and statesmanship--as opposed to propaganda and politics. Statesmen try to find solutions based on understanding and appreciating of the needs and interests of an adversary; politicians play to the mob--through the media.

The criticism is not aimed at Russia alone. To the contrary; since the end of the Cold War more than 20 years ago, successive American administrations have acted as if nothing had really changed. Why? There is no longer a Soviet Union. The Communist threat is history. Why, then, are relations between Washington and Moscow so poor?

The issue isn't even on the U.S. national news agenda.
