On the face of it, an eroded Syrian military seems like a good thing from an Israeli point of view. Assad, after all, is an ally of Iran, which has vowed to eradicate Israel. But Israelis (and their friends and supporters abroad) worry about the Islamist threat to their northern neighbor. Islamists associated with Al Qaeda are emerging as the most effective elements seeking Assad's overthrow.
