Syria didn't have to follow the model of Libya, where the United States and NATO stupidly and inexplicably intervened unnecessarily on the side of Islamists, including Al Qaeda members, supporters and sympathizers.

With Russia's cooperation, once the insurrection took hold, Syria could and should have become a politically neutral state, divided along ethnic and religious lines into autonomous, demilitarized provinces.
