Ancient Maaloula Abandoned by the West
Twelve years after 9/11, Islamist/Al Qaeda terrorists supported--incredibly--by the United States are battling secular Syrian forces for control of an ancient Christian town.
Syria's Christians clearly support the Syrian regime, aware that an Islamist/Al Qaeda conquest of "the heartbeat of the Arab world" will mean annihilation of Christians and Alawites and enslavement of all secular Muslims.
Notice the term the Arab world. It exists, bound by culture and language; and it includes Christians and other minorities as well as secular Muslims not wanting to live under barbaric law. Time was, politicians and pundits in the United States and Europe paid a lot of attention to the Arab world. But that changed with the Islamizing of the Middle East--by the President of the United States. Barack Obama pointedly addressed "the Muslim world" in Cairo--a speech Egypt's president and America's ally, Hosni Mubarak, declined to attend to protest Obama's insistence on inviting the long banned (for good reason) Muslim Brotherhood. Obama's move was seen across the region as an endorsement of the clerical fascist group's ideology.
