Israel's defense minister asserts Iran is already capable of attacking Western targets with radiological weapons--also known as radiological dispersal devices or, more commonly, dirty bombs.
Danielle Pletka, VP for foreign and defense policy at the American Enterprise Institute, believes Iran currently has the capacity to build a dirty bomb.
The Council on Foreign Relations dirty bomb backgrounder says the weapon should be considered a weapon of mass destruction "more because of its capacity to cause terror and disruption than its ability to inflict heavy casualties." CFR adds:
Depending on the sophistication of the bomb, wind conditions, and the speed with which the area of the attack was evacuated, the number of deaths and injuries from a dirty bomb explosion might not be substantially greater than from a conventional bomb explosion. But panic over radioactivity and evacuation measures could create chaos.
