With about five weeks to go before the Games begin, security in Sochi will be tightened significantly; the city will become a fortress. Every effort will be made to prevent a repeat of the Munich Massacre.

There will be a crackdown, as called for by the Russian press.

VICTORY: USSR soldier waves red flag in Stalingrad, 1943.

Volgograd, formerly called Stalingrad, is famous for the Battle of Stalingrad against the German Army in World War II. In 2013, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the German defeat at Stalingrad, city officials voted unanimously to change the name Volgograd back to Stalingrad for six days every year to commemorate the battle. If the United States and Britain could ally with the Stalinist Soviet Union to defeat the Nazi/Fascist foe during WW II, surely, a new alliance could at last be forged, more than 12 years after 9/11, to defeat Islamist terrorism, regardless of whether it is sponsored by Shiiite Iran or Sunni Saudi Arabia.

The Sochi Winter Olympics is scheduled to open on February 6, 2014, four days after the 71st anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad.
