ENDNOTE: U.S. President Jimmy Carter boycotted the Moscow Olympics because of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan (which the United States sparked with its secret intervention). But human rights and allegations of official Soviet corruption--involving the prime minister's son-in-law, Wall Street investment firms, The New York Times, NBC, and a cast of colorful characters led by the controversial oil company tycoon Armand Hammer--were also newsworthy issues affecting the games.
