The United States is concerned that some U.S. citizens fighting in Syria alongside Al Qaeda-linked Islamist groups could return to the U.S. with the intention of carrying out terrorist attacks.
That Washington should have considered the risks more carefully before meddling in Syria in the first place--under the banners of human rights and democracy--does not seem to matter. More than 12 years after the horrific blowback of 9/11, the U.S. persists in trying to ride the Islamist tiger without being eaten.
